RAMPAGE REVIEWS: NXT 01/14/2015

This week we have Tyson Kid vs Finn Balor, the anticipated match between Bull Dempsey and Baron Corbin, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch taking on Natalya and Charlotte, and on top of that stacked card we also have the rematch of Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville for the NXT Title!  How’d this stacked card do?  Let’s find out!

First things first I am so glad to see and hear Rene Young back on commentary, she has an attention to detail that I don’t think anyone else on the commentary team does.  I don’t know if she is making it up as she goes, or she happens to know the names of all of Tyson Kidd’s cats, but I don’t care she does a great job.

Tyson Kidd vs Finn Balor
First thing I noticed was no Natalya with Kidd this week.  I am glad if this is the end of their drama.  Both Kidd and Natalya benefit from putting all that drama behind them and getting in the ring and wrestling.  This match is everything you would expect from these two, a fast paced, high impact match.  In the end Finn takes the win with a Double Foot Stomp to the back of the head!

Thoughts –   My only criticism is that when Kidd locked in The Sharpshooter, and Finn got to the ropes he broke the hold at the count of three.  I think that any heel should break just before the five count is over.

Bull Dempsey vs Baron Corbin
This match has building for months at this point?  They are both built as two unstoppable monsters who destroy their opponents and don’t back down.  In this match Baron was a dominant force, and Bull was put into his place,  forced to roll out of the ring collect himself before re-entering the match and getting caught with End of Days, after missing his top rope head butt.

Thoughts – This was match that was hyped by the fans.  These two has side my side matches for weeks where they destroyed their opponents.  This week however they had pretty much a regular match, and I think both men came out looking weaker after.  I am disappointed this match happened like this.

Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch vs Natalya and Charlotte
This was a great back and forth match with both teams.  This let all four ladies show what they can do in the ring like we have seen in the past few weeks, and they did not disappoint.  In the end we see Sasha Banks get the pinfall on Charlotte with a handful of tights.  It was a great cheap win.

Thoughts – This match started off with Rene Young putting over how impressive the physiques of both Charlotte and Natalya were.  This made me super happy,  normally the Divas only get attention for being pretty,  this was more of these girls will hurt you.  Which I appreciate especially since Natalya while she is not built like a typical model, but is built like a fighter.  I am hoping the end of this match sets up another bout with Charlotte and Sasha Banks,  that would be great to see.  Hell I would love to see NXT with Women’s Tag Team Belts as well.

Sami Zayn vs Adrian Neville – NXT Title Rematch
This match was not what I expecting from Zayn and Neville,  they surprised me in a good way.  It start of with a series of moves, counter moves, and one ups-manship.  Much like Lucha Underground this week this match was reminiscent of RVD vs Jerry Lynn for the ECW TV Title.  These are two men that know each other’s styles and moves inside and out.  Over the course of the match Neville hits a series of devastating moves to the head and neck of Sami (Frankensteiners, Upper Cuts, reverses a powerbomb into another ‘rana).  At the end Sami does overcome nearly being knocked out,  dodges the Red Arrow,  and connects wit the Helluva Kick for the win to retain his title.

Thoughts – This was an awesome match,  but not what I was expecting it was a slow pace since most of the match was Neville working over the head and neck of Zayn.  I can’t think of anyone who has focused on the head or neck since Benoit so that good change of pace.

Post Match

Sami Zayn’s celebration is interrupted by a brutal powerbomb by Kevin Owens to end the show.

Final Thoughts – This show mirrored Lucha Underground’s main event this week to a degree that was almost frightening.  But it sets up the champ as being established as well as who the next contender is going to be.  It’s also set up Charlotte vs Sasha Part IV, and established Finn Balor can get the job done on his own.  The only disappointment for me is that Bull Dempsey and Baron Corbin both seem like less of a monster after this week.  I still call it a good week for NXT!
